These are more interesting drawings. I've left more of the lines . But still haven't figured out how to relate the chunks  and interesting shapes to the environment. I find it interesting how difficult it is to break the habits of drawing in the bay area figurative style,  I find that when  the first thing that comes to people 's mind is that the drawings remind them of Diebenkorn's. Once that happens they actually don't see the drawings. The same thing with  my drawing habits--once i  slip back into that style, I tend not to see the figure

Relating to the background in term of chunks brings up interesting ideas. First, the chunks can be played against each other,destroying in the process, the actual light effects and creatng new ones. The playing of lines against each other can create new  or multiple senses of  space and the artists and /or viewers place in space in relation to the drawing. It also brings up ideas of building up layers and layers of lines and picking out space among them. Or going in a  Giacometti direction. the problem is I so easily slip into a bay are approach that i find it difficult to break out. When you add erasures effects it complicates everything,as does adding charcoal smudge marks,on and off the figure.The only way through this is to draw the figure 3 or 4 times a week and that costs almost two hundred dollars. hard to shell out even if i had it.  I plan to draw Friday. Hopefully I'll be able to focus more on these issues. The smart thing to do I guess would be to draw things other than the figure but I'm so in love witht the figure than I find that difficult.
